The Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court after facing charges related to his dual citizenship status.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, brings an end to a prolonged legal battle over allegations that Quayson held dual citizenship at the time he filed to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections, a move the prosecution argued contravened Ghana’s Constitution.

Quayson, who had previously denied the charges and maintained that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship before filing his candidacy, expressed relief after the ruling.

The Assin North MP was discharged after the court delivered a ruling on the submission of no case.

The acquittal and discharge by the High Court have put an end to the legal uncertainties surrounding Quayson’s parliamentary seat, allowing him to continue with his duties as a Member of Parliament without further hindrance.
