The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed deep concern over recent violent clashes in Bawku, which tragically resulted in the loss of lives and injuries.

Mr. Ayariga, who is currently on an official assignment abroad, learned of the unrest and the subsequent vandalism and attempted arson of his private residence in Bawku.

In a statement issued on Friday, 11 April, The Majority Leader acknowledges the frustration of the youth regarding the slow resolution of the Bawku conflict and the alleged misconduct of certain law enforcement officers.

He emphasized the importance of channeling grievances through peaceful means and reiterated his commitment to justice and lasting peace in the region.

“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” Ayariga stated.

“However, I urge all of us to remain committed to the peace process being led by His Majesty the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.”

Ayariga also addressed misinformation circulating about his stance on the chieftaincy dispute in Bawku, reaffirming his consistent position and support for the ongoing peace efforts.

He called on all parties to exercise restraint and allow the mediation process to reach its conclusion.

“My personal position on the matter has been known to all over the years and has never changed. It won’t change,” he affirmed.

“I agree with the youth of Kusaug that another person cannot reside in Bawku claiming to be chief. But in reverence to the great Asante Stool, I leave that matter to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to resolve expeditiously.”
