President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP), a key initiative under the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), aimed at modernizing Ghana’s agricultural sector, enhancing food security, and creating thousands of jobs across the country.

Speaking at the launch event held in Techiman, Mahama described the Feed Ghana Programme as the “flagship initiative” of the broader agricultural agenda, stressing its significance in addressing Ghana’s food challenges and boosting the economy.

“The Feed Ghana Programme is our strategic umbrella programme under which all agricultural projects and interventions will be executed,” he said.

“It is anchored on targeted strategies to increase food production, promote modernized farming practices, strengthen infrastructure, and create agro-industrial zones across the country.”

Mahama added that the AETA framework will also reduce food inflation, promote export-oriented agriculture, and support agro-industrial development.

The FGP will prioritize key commodities that support food security, import substitution, and industrial growth. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to Ghana’s ambition of becoming more self-reliant in food production.

A major highlight of the launch was the introduction of the Nkoko Nketenkete project, a poultry-focused intervention designed to reduce Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported chicken.

“Currently, Ghana spends over $400 million annually on chicken imports,” Mr. Mahama stated. “Under the Nkoko Nketenkete project, we aim to produce 4 million birds this year — equivalent to 10,000 metric tons of chicken.”

According to President Mahama, to achieve this, the project will support 50 selected anchor farmers with the necessary tools and investment and the initiative will be carried out in partnership with the Poultry Farmers Association and will focus on strengthening the entire poultry value chain, including hatcheries, feed production, veterinary services, and meat processing.

Mahama emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s development and promised that a future NDC government under his leadership would ensure that farmers receive the full support they need to thrive.

“We are committed to building a Ghana where food is abundant, affordable, and produced by our own hardworking farmers,” he concluded.
