In his opening remarks, IIA Ghana President Joseph Dakora Zumasigee emphasized the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in the internal audit profession. He highlighted Ghana’s proactive adoption of the Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS), making it one of the first countries to implement these standards.

Zumasigee noted that the GIAS were not merely imported but were adapted with substantial input from Ghana, ensuring they reflect the country’s unique perspectives and needs

The Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), Dr. Eric Oduro Osae, reported significant achievements in the public sector’s internal audit practices. He stated that the vigilance of internal auditors had saved the country GHC5.4 billion from financial irregularities in public institutions, as per the 2023 Auditor-General’s report.

Dr. Osae also mentioned the development of a national roadmap in collaboration with the IIA and the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), to meet the global mandatory reporting date of January 2025.

The conference serves as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, experiences, and challenges facing internal auditors and audit committees. It aims to chart the way forward towards improving public sector internal audit performance and consolidating democratic governance and accountability in Ghana

As Ghana continues to strengthen its internal audit frameworks, the conference underscores the critical role of internal auditors in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development.
