The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has announced a series of solemn activities in honour of Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025.

The Vatican confirmed the death of the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, just a day after he had celebrated Easter Sunday Mass. Despite recent health challenges, the late Pontiff remained devoted to his pastoral duties until his final moments.
In a statement signed by Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and President of the GCBC, the Church in Ghana is urging all clergy, consecrated persons, and lay faithful to “unite in prayer and remembrance for the late Pontiff.”
The GCBC has outlined key memorial activities, including a National Memorial Mass, the date of which will be communicated in due course.
“All bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful who are able to attend will be warmly invited to participate in this solemn liturgy,” the statement said.
In addition, the GCBC is encouraging “all archdioceses, dioceses, and parishes to organize local Requiem Masses and special Holy Hours in honour of Pope Francis. These should be moments of prayerful reflection on his teachings and witness.”
The statement also invites Catholic institutions such as schools and seminaries to consider “prayer services, talks, or discussions to help the faithful, especially the young, to appreciate the life and legacy of Pope Francis.”
As the global Church prepares to elect a new Pope, the Bishops have called on the faithful to pray “not only for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul, but also for the global Church.”
“May the Lord, whom he served so faithfully and joyfully, welcome him into the eternal joy of His heavenly kingdom,” the statement concluded.
Pope Francis’ papacy was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice and the poor values that will continue to inspire millions around the world.
