
President John Dramani Mahama has extended his heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community following the death of Pope Francis, describing him as a beacon of humility and social justice whose influence will live on for generations.

In a Facebook post, the President paid tribute to his legacy of compassion and justice. He also reflected on his personal encounter with the late Pontiff and the impact of his life and service.
“The world woke up to the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing. On behalf of my family and the people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in Ghana during this time of profound grief.”
He recalled a memorable visit to the Vatican with his wife, Lordina Mahama, where they had the distinct honour of meeting Pope Francis, an experience he says left a lasting impression.
“I fondly remember visiting the Vatican with my wife, Lordina, where we had the distinct honour of meeting Pope Francis”.
President Mahama praised the Pope’s unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalised, noting that his leadership extended far beyond the confines of the Church.
“His legacy of compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice will continue to inspire generations,” he said, adding that “his leadership and advocacy for the poor and marginalised resonate deeply.”
The President concluded his tribute with a solemn prayer: “May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88, was widely admired as the “People’s Pope” for his progressive stance on key global issues, including poverty, climate change, and inclusivity within the Church.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief and remembrance from leaders and faithful across the world.
