Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, a senior Justice of the Supreme Court, has been appointed Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

The appointment is in line with Article 144(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which mandates that the most senior judge of the Supreme Court assume the role in the absence or incapacity of the substantive Chief Justice.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie brings over 15 years of experience on the Supreme Court bench, having been appointed in June 2008 by then-President John Agyekum Kufuor.
His elevation to acting head of the judiciary comes at a critical time, as the country’s top judge faces a formal inquiry over petitions seeking her removal from office.
His interim leadership is expected to ensure continuity in the judicial system as a five-member committee investigates the petitions against Justice Torkornoo.
