President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), following allegations of negligence linked to the recent death of a patient at the facility’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

The dismissal comes amid mounting public concern over worsening healthcare delivery at the hospital, where key medical equipment is said to be non-functional and service standards have come under scrutiny.

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, paid an unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22, to assess the situation firsthand.

The visit was part of a broader government effort to improve healthcare delivery in the Northern Region.

During the visit, Mr. Akandoh expressed deep concern over the state of essential hospital equipment. “We have made payments, yet several machines are not in use,” he observed.

He also acknowledged the strain the ongoing water crisis in Tamale has placed on healthcare delivery, describing it as a regional challenge requiring urgent attention at the highest level.

“This is a broader regional issue that requires urgent presidential intervention,” the Minister stated.

On steps to address the equipment shortfalls, Mr. Akandoh said the Ministry would collaborate with hospital leadership to prioritise solutions.

“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I cannot do it all alone, I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together,” he noted.

He encouraged residents not to lose faith in the facility.

“Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronise the facility,” he added, assuring the public of improved services in the coming days.
