Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has responded to the escalating tension with doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), saying he had no intention of disrespecting medical professionals during his recent visit.

The unannounced visit on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, follows the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, reportedly due to the absence of a functional ventilator at TTH’s emergency unit.
A video capturing a heated exchange between the Minister and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, Head of the Accident and Emergency Department, went viral, triggering public outcry and a wave of criticism.
In response, the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) suspended all emergency and outpatient services indefinitely, citing unwarranted attacks from government officials.
The group is demanding unqualified apologies and an urgent supply of essential medical equipment before returning to work.
Addressing the media in Accra on Thursday, April 24, the health minister recalled a personal experience to illustrate his empathy and commitment to the health sector.
“It can happen to anybody, it happened to me. When I had an accident, the first place I was rushed to was Nyinahini District Hospital. I never imagined that I would one day be at Nyinahini District Hospital, but I was there.”
The minister reaffirmed his respect for health workers.
“I have absolutely no intention to disrespect any medical doctor or health worker; that will be the last thing I will do. But let it be said that respect is reciprocal.”
He appealed to the doctor for unity and resolution.
“I’m prepared to work with everybody in the sector. My humble appeal to the medical doctors and health practitioners at Tamale Teaching Hospital is that I am the first person to take care of your interests. Therefore, let us call off the strike and let us all regroup and strategise the way forward”.
“There are some of the things we can do with our internally generated funds, so please, let us confront the issues as they are.”
Despite his clarifications, controversy remains. The minister’s decision to relieve TTH CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, of his post has sparked backlash, with the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) condemning the move as a breach of due process and a clear abuse of power. The GMA has demanded a public apology from the minister.
