Mahama swears in new Military Commanders, reaffirms commitment to strengthening Armed Forces

President John Dramani Mahama officially swore in the newly appointed service commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces as members of the Armed Forces Council.

The move marks a significant step toward reinforcing the operational capacity and leadership structure of the military.

The ceremony preceded a crucial meeting of the Council, during which key matters, including officer promotions and the retooling of the armed forces, were discussed.

President Mahama, who chairs the Council, emphasized the importance of a well-resourced and disciplined military, noting that Ghana’s peace and territorial integrity remain non-negotiable.

The newly sworn-in top brass includes Major General William Agyapong, who now serves as Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff.

Their appointments, described by many as timely and strategic, reflect a renewed focus on professionalism, regional security, and internal capacity building.

Present at the event were other distinguished members of the Armed Forces Council, including Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for the Interior Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Also in attendance were Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama and Presidential Advisor and Special Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari.

As the country grapples with growing regional security concerns and evolving global threats, the President reiterated his administration’s resolve to empower the Ghana Armed Forces through adequate resources, training, and leadership.

The swearing-in of the new commanders signals a forward-looking military posture aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and promoting peace.
