The Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism has paid a working visit to Sunda Ghana Limited, one of the country’s leading local manufacturers, as part of its oversight function to better understand the realities on the ground in Ghana’s industrial sector.

The visit, which took place during Parliament’s short recess, was aimed at engaging directly with industry players to assess operational challenges and explore how government policies can be better aligned to support local manufacturing.
The Managing Director of Sunda Ghana Limited, Mr. Wei Yea, welcomed the Committee and delivered a presentation outlining the company’s history, investments, and operations in Ghana.
He revealed that the company has recently faced significant setbacks due to the influx of smuggled, low-quality products, particularly diapers, into the Ghanaian market.
“We were forced to uninstall two of our operational lines due to the smuggling of low-quality products, which unfortunately led to the layoff of about 350 workers,” Mr. Yea explained.
He called on the lawmakers to help develop and enforce stronger policies to protect local industries, stressing the company’s dedication to quality and job creation.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordzie, expressed concern over the situation and commended Sunda Ghana for its resilience and contributions to the national economy.
“I’m happy to note a lot of things are going on in Ghana, unfortunately, we are not aware of it,” he remarked.
He further explained that the Committee’s field visit was in line with instructions from the Majority Leader and the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mahama Ayariga.
“I think that is the reason Majority Leader and the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has asked all Committees to use this short recess to leave the walls of Parliament to the field to get information that will guide the decision of the president to reset Ghana,” he noted.
Hon. Hottordzie assured that the Committee would consider Sunda’s concerns and emphasized that protecting and expanding such businesses aligns with the President’s 24-hour economy agenda, an initiative designed to enhance productivity and spur economic growth through round-the-clock industrial operations.
