The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost following his election as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Cardinal Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV and the 267th pontiff, was elected after a conclave at the Vatican and has since assumed spiritual leadership of over a billion Catholics worldwide.

In a Facebook post, Speaker Bagbin praised the seamless transition of leadership within the Church, describing it as a beacon in a rapidly changing world.

“Our church has demonstrated a seamless transition of leadership through time-tested traditions in a fast-changing world. May we continue to be a model for all evolving systems, be they political, professional, or business,” he wrote.

He also expressed hope that the new Pope’s tenure would strengthen the Church’s global voice on critical issues.

“We pray with you daily to continually make the Church a home for spiritual fulfilment and a global authority on justice, morality, human and environmental dignity.”

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a new chapter in the Vatican’s leadership, with high expectations for unity, reform, and moral clarity in an increasingly complex world.
