Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah has blamed the previous Akufo-Addo administration for the poor state of Ghana’s presidential jet, claiming the aircraft has been grounded due to severe neglect.

In a post shared on Facebook on Friday, May 23, Dr Boamah revealed that the presidential jet, which should serve the nation’s top officials, is currently unfit for use, with its fuel tank reportedly corroded and the aircraft undergoing major repairs abroad.

According to him, the jet has been “in the ‘hospital’ abroad for maintenance, repair and overhaul” and may only return to a “fairly usable state after three months of ‘therapy’.”

His comments were in reaction to criticisms from some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who questioned why Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang returned from medical treatment in the UK aboard a chartered aircraft.

Dr Boamah dismissed those concerns and instead shifted focus to what he described as the real issue,  the grounded state of the nation’s official aircraft.

“Akufo-Addo’s administration rundown the Presidential jet. Among others, its fuel tank is even corroded,” he wrote.

He further added, “Let the NPP that suffered the most humiliating defeat in recent memory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections know this.”

“The Presidential jet is unfit for use presently,” he concluded, stressing the need for Ghanaians to be informed about the state of key national assets.

The Ministry of Defence has not yet provided further details on when the aircraft will be fully restored to service.
