Parliament is set to receive a ministerial briefing on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, following the tragic drowning of seven students in the Black Volta River.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, announced on the floor of the House that the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, have been directed by the Speaker to provide a detailed account of measures being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

This follows a statement by the Member of Parliament for Lawra, Hon. Bede Anwataazumo Ziedeng, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, which drew national attention to the harrowing incident.

The students, who were reportedly returning from school, drowned while attempting to cross the river, an avoidable tragedy that has raised concerns about infrastructure, transportation, and safety measures in riverine communities.

The expected ministerial briefing will address both the immediate response to the incident and long-term strategies to improve safety in high-risk communities across the country.
