The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, is now under the protection of the Ghana Police Service, following the withdrawal of her military escort.

The transition was confirmed by the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, in a Facebook post on Saturday, July 5.

“The Electoral Commission Ghana Chairperson, Jean Mensa, has been provided with protection by the Ghana Police Service, following the withdrawal of military protection.”

According to him, the move is in line with the police’s constitutional mandate to provide internal security and protect public officials.

Dr Boamah explained that while the military may occasionally be deployed when threats escalate beyond normal, it should not become the standard for civilian protection.

He described the presence of soldiers as one that “can cause shock and awe,” hence must be reserved for exceptional situations.
