Voters in the Ablekuma North constituency are heading to the polls today, Friday, July 11, 2025, to cast their ballots in a critical parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations, bringing renewed attention to one of the most contested electoral battles in recent memory.

The rerun aims to bring closure to a months-long impasse and restore parliamentary representation to a constituency that has remained without an MP since the December 2024 general elections.
A Seat in Electoral Limbo
The controversy surrounding the Ablekuma North parliamentary results originated from the December 7, 2024, polls when disputes erupted over the collation process and authenticity of pink sheets across 62 polling stations. Tensions ran high between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), prompting a legal standoff.
Although the Electoral Commission (EC) managed to collate results from 59 polling stations, three remained unresolved. A subsequent ruling by the High Court in January 2025 directed the Commission to complete the collation and declare the outcome.
However, citing concerns over missing endorsements and irregularities in 19 of the polling stations, the EC announced its decision to conduct a rerun in those areas to uphold electoral credibility.
NPP’s Boycott and Candidate’s Bold Step
The NPP initially opposed the EC’s directive, maintaining that its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had secured victory in the original election with a 414-vote lead. The party filed an injunction to stop the rerun, but the court dismissed the application on July 9, labeling it as “unmeritorious.”
Despite the party’s boycott, Akua Afriyie declared her decision to participate. “I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest,” she stated in an address to journalists on July 10.
Her candidacy has since drawn strong backing from some constituency executives, sitting and former NPP MPs, and loyalists who have campaigned vigorously in her support.
NDC Eyes Victory
The National Democratic Congress, on the other hand, has remained united and confident. The party claims its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, won the December polls and is optimistic about reclaiming the seat in today’s rerun.
Campaign efforts have been intensified across the constituency, with party officials urging residents to vote decisively.
“The people of Ablekuma North are ready for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn represents that change,” said NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections, Prof. Joshua Alabi, during a campaign event on Thursday.
EC Reassures Public
The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its readiness to deliver a credible rerun. Addressing the press ahead of the polls, Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare emphasized the Commission’s resolve to bring the matter to a close.
“We are desirous of bringing the election in the Ablekuma North constituency to a conclusion and to ensure that the constituents have a representative in Parliament,” he noted.
Security has also been intensified in all 19 affected polling stations to ensure a peaceful voting process.
Security
The Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of Defence have both issued strong assurances to the public ahead of the vote.
The Accra Regional Police Command confirmed that security personnel have been deployed across all 19 polling stations to maintain peace and order. In a statement released on July 10, the police pledged to control both vehicular and pedestrian traffic around the voting areas and called on the public to cooperate fully.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has categorically ruled out any military involvement in today’s exercise.
“There will be no military deployment,” he emphasized in a Facebook post, repeating the message three times to reassure the public. He added,
“To ensure a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will be fully in charge of security for today’s elections in Ablekuma North Constituency.”
He also urged the public to “learn from past experiences… and prioritize citizen safety and security.”
High Stakes for Both Parties
The outcome of today’s rerun will not only determine the next MP for Ablekuma North but also serve as a barometer for internal unity and grassroots strength within the NPP and NDC.
For the NDC, clinching the seat would mark a breakthrough in an area traditionally dominated by the NPP. For the NPP, a win for Akua Afriyie would signal strong base loyalty, even amid leadership division over the rerun.
As the polls open, all eyes remain fixed on Ablekuma North, where the political stakes are as high as the public anticipation.
