Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties after appearing before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.

Wontumi was invited by the CID for questioning over alleged involvement in illegal mining (galamsey) activities. His appearance followed an ultimatum issued by Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, who warned last Friday that the NPP regional chairman would be arrested if he failed to report to the police.

Sources indicate that three mining-related charges are expected to be filed against him at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

Speaking to journalists after the engagement with investigators, Wontumi’s lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client was cooperating fully with authorities but cautioned against any attempt to revoke his existing police enquiry bail.

“Such a move will be vigorously resisted,” he warned.

Meanwhile, security sources say the police and state prosecutors are finalizing the charge sheet ahead of Tuesday’s court appearance.
