The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly objected to the government’s plan to merge state-owned telecom operator AT Ghana (formerly AirtelTigo) with Telecel.

At a press conference held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the Ranking Member of the Information and Communication Committee, Mathew Nyindam, described the move as an “unholy alliance” that would rob Ghanaians of a vital national asset.

The Minority expressed deep concerns over the technical, operational, and financial viability of the proposed merger, citing Telecel’s record of unfulfilled commitments.

“Telecel promised to invest $500 million after acquiring Vodafone Ghana, but that promise was not honored. We fear the same fate awaits AT Ghana,” Mr. Nyindam stated.

He further raised concerns about job security for AT Ghana’s 300 employees and the potential impact on the $50 million World Bank-funded Digital Infrastructure Venture (DIV) Project.

“Any attempt to compromise the DIV project would be disastrous for Ghana’s digital infrastructure,” he warned.

The Minority Caucus is calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing consolidation, acquisition, or merger process involving AT Ghana and Telecel.

“We will not stand idly by while a vital national asset is being sold off without transparency and accountability,” Mr. Nyindam emphasized.
