The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a temporary shutdown of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant due to unresolved contractual issues and the lack of critical maintenance needed to sustain efficient and safe operations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the management of GWL described the move as a necessary step to protect both equipment integrity and the quality of treated water supplied to the public.

“The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) wishes to inform the public, particularly residents and businesses within the eastern coastal corridor of Accra, that the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant has been temporarily shut down. This decision follows unresolved contractual issues and the prolonged lack of critical maintenance required to sustain efficient and safe operations,” the statement read.

The desalination plant has for years served as a vital source of potable water to communities, including Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, La, parts of Sakumono, and other adjoining areas.

To mitigate the impact of the shutdown, GWL said it has implemented emergency measures, including rerouting water from alternative treatment plants and prioritizing essential service institutions such as hospitals, schools, and health centres within the affected areas.

“GWL remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous water supply services to our cherished customers. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and assure the public that engagements are ongoing to expedite the resolution of the matter and restore normal operations,” the statement continued.

The water utility company further assured residents that regular updates on progress and timelines for restoration will be shared through its official communication channels, including its website, social media platforms, mainstream media, and community engagement representatives.

Customers with water supply concerns have been encouraged to contact GWL via its toll-free number 0800 40000 (Vodafone lines), or the following hotlines: 0302 2218240, 0207385088, 0207385089, 0207385090, and WhatsApp lines 0555123393 / 0555155524.
