The Ministry of Health (MoH) has begun a nationwide posting exercise aimed at addressing the persistent shortage of medical doctors in rural and underserved areas across the country.

In a statement issued in Accra on November 3, 2025, and signed by Mr. Tonny Goodman, Head of the Health Training Institution and Spokesperson for the Ministry, the MoH said the exercise forms part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure equitable access to healthcare services across all regions and districts.

“The Ministry of Health urges doctors to accept postings to the available vacancies at the various regions and district hospitals,” the statement said, adding that the initiative supports the government’s plan to achieve universal health coverage.

According to the Ministry, the postings are being processed strictly through its official online recruitment portal, and no individual or group has been authorized to demand payment or influence placement decisions.

“Eligible doctors are therefore cautioned not to engage middlemen or pay any persons who promise to alter or fast-track their postings,” Mr. Goodman warned.

The Ministry emphasized that the exercise reflects its ongoing commitment to ensuring a fair distribution of healthcare professionals and improving service delivery nationwide.

Mr. Goodman noted that the Ministry is determined to make sure every Ghanaian, regardless of location, has access to a qualified medical doctor.

Data from the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Plan (2023) reveals that about 42 per cent of Ghana’s doctors are stationed in the Greater Accra Region, while a combined 57.2 per cent work within the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. This imbalance has left many northern and rural districts struggling with inadequate medical staff, with some hospitals relying on a single doctor to serve entire communities.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has repeatedly described the situation as unsustainable and urged the government to adopt a fairer deployment policy to strengthen healthcare delivery in deprived areas.

The Ministry encouraged all qualified doctors to visit its official website to complete their registration and confirm their postings before the deadline stated on the portal.
