President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of six young women during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi, the President described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation,” noting that all six victims were female applicants who had gone to the stadium with hopes of serving their country.

“The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition,” President Mahama said.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The President further called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, stressing the importance of improved safety protocols during national recruitment and public events.

The deadly stampede occurred when thousands of job seekers crowded the El Wak Sports Stadium for the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.

The Ghana Armed Forces has since confirmed six deaths and several injuries, with victims receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. The recruitment exercise has been suspended in the Greater Accra Region until further notice as investigations continue.
