Dr. Roland Ayertey, CEO and Medical Director of Elimmas Health and Senior Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, has raised alarm over the growing trend of women delaying childbirth, stressing that the biological clock is a reality that cannot be ignored.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Off the Lens on Online TimesGH’s YouTube channel, Dr. Ayertey said many of his patients seeking fertility services are women in their late 30s, 40s, and even early 50s.
“One of our biggest concerns has become that people are trying to have children at a time when they should actually be stopping,” he said, explaining that life choices and circumstances often lead women to postpone childbirth longer than medically advisable.
Dr. Ayertey explained the biological realities, highlighting a lack of awareness among many women about egg depletion over time.
“Most women think that they can have children all the way till their 50s, and it comes as a shock when you tell them that you’ve been losing your eggs since you were 18. By 35, your chances of getting pregnant again are slim, and by 40, very slim. And this is a natural progression.”
He emphasized the urgent need to educate women on fertility timelines.
“You lose eggs every day, and the numbers go down, the quality goes down, and women, we need to find a way to communicate that for women to understand that the biological clock is really real.”
Dr. Ayertey’s concerns come as part of a broader conversation on reproductive health and family planning, underscoring the importance of awareness and timely action in ensuring successful pregnancies.
