Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, Member of Parliament for Pru East, has raised concerns in Parliament following the cancellation of several examination papers by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), a decision that has affected students both in his constituency and across the country.

Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament, Boam demanded answers from Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu on what concrete steps the ministry and WAEC are taking to prevent future exam malpractices and cushion innocent candidates from the aftermath of cancellations.

He stressed that many BECE and WASSCE candidates in Pru East are now anxious about their academic progression, with some fearing their educational dreams could be derailed.

Responding to the concerns, Minister Iddrisu explained that WAEC only cancels examination papers after thorough investigations confirm malpractice, including collusion, the use of foreign materials, or electronic devices.

He pointed to a growing trend of phone-related cheating and said WAEC, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), is intensifying security measures, randomising test papers, and sensitising schools.

The minister also disclosed plans to embed integrity and ethics education in the curriculum starting from kindergarten, to gradually build a culture of honesty and responsibility among learners.

The exchange in Parliament highlights growing frustration over persistent exam irregularities and the urgent need for stronger systems to protect the academic futures of students nationwide.
