The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to announce his final determination on the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy dispute today, Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace.

President John Dramani Mahama, earlier this year, tasked the Asantehene to lead renewed efforts to resolve the decades-old conflict. Otumfuo began the latest mediation process in April, holding separate meetings with delegations from the opposing factions between April 28 and 30 to revive dialogue and lay the groundwork for productive engagement.

Although the discussions were briefly suspended, the process resumed on May 13. At the time, the Asantehene noted that “the discussions had contributed to a period of relative calm in the municipality.”

Bawku has for years experienced intermittent violence, sporadic attacks, and heightened tensions, resulting in loss of life, movement restrictions, and recurring curfews. The prolonged unrest has disrupted livelihoods, strained community relations, and drawn nationwide attention to the urgent need for lasting peace.

According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s sitting marks the culmination of months of consultations and peace-building efforts. Many residents and observers across the country are hopeful that the Asantehene’s final pronouncement will chart a path toward reconciliation, stability, and development in the conflict-prone area.
