Ghana has commemorated World AIDS Day 2025 with fresh national data revealing that more than 334,700 people are currently living with HIV, alongside over 15,200 new infections and 12,600 AIDS-related deaths recorded in 2024. The figures highlight the ongoing public health challenge posed by the epidemic.

In a statement issued Monday, 1 December, the government described the day as a moment for “reflection, solidarity and renewed commitment” toward achieving an AIDS-free Ghana.

This year’s global theme, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” underscores the need for stronger, shock-resilient health systems. Ghana’s national sub-theme, “Africa Unites Against AIDS,” reinforces the importance of regional cooperation and shared responsibility in safeguarding public health.

To ensure continuity of essential HIV services amid declining external funding, the government outlined a series of measures. These include the President’s February 2025 directive to the Ministry of Finance to secure sustainable financing for core HIV services. Cabinet has also approved a revised National Workplace HIV and Wellness Policy aimed at bolstering prevention, reducing stigma, and strengthening employee protection. Additionally, the National HIV Response Sustainability Roadmap has been launched to mobilise domestic resources, widen access to treatment and prevention, and build long-term resilience.

The statement stressed the critical role of the private sector, noting that HIV continues to affect productivity and economic growth. Corporate institutions were urged to invest in workplace HIV programmes, support awareness and testing campaigns, and implement policies that safeguard workers.

Government further commended stakeholders across public, private, and civil society sectors for their dedication and innovation, and encouraged citizens to take HIV self-tests, seek prompt treatment, and help combat stigma and discrimination.
