Police bust street robbery gang in Dzorwulu, two arrested

The Kotobabi District Police Command has arrested two suspected street robbers following an intelligence-led motorbike patrol operation at Dzorwulu in Accra.

According to a police statement signed by the Greater Accra Regional Head of Public Affairs, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the arrest occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, during a routine patrol by a motorbike team. The officers spotted two suspicious persons riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike.

The suspects, identified as Stephen Gletsu, 37, who was riding the motorbike, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, the pillion rider, were both dressed in black outfits and wore black helmets. Police said the pillion rider was visibly wielding a cutlass.

Upon noticing the patrol team, the suspects attempted to flee, triggering a chase. During the pursuit, officers fired warning shots, causing the suspects to lose control of the motorbike and fall near Roman Ridge, close to the Nigerian High Commission. They subsequently attempted to escape on foot but were tracked and arrested by the police.

A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of several items, including an Infinix mobile phone, an iPhone 12 Pro, a Samsung A21, an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 13, an Infinix feature phone, an itel feature phone, a Nokia feature phone, an Infinix X6528 phone, a necklace, as well as cash amounting to GH¢2,690 and US$2.

The suspects sustained injuries during the arrest and were taken to the Police Hospital for treatment before being discharged. During interrogation, they reportedly admitted to robbing multiple victims in parts of Accra.

“Statements have been obtained from several victims who have identified both the accused persons and their stolen mobile phones,” the police said.

Further investigations led to the arrest of four additional accomplices, who are currently assisting police with investigations.

Meanwhile, Gletsu and Sheriff have been remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear before the court on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
