5 dead, 12 injured in Cape Coast-Accra highway crash

Five people have died and 12 others have been injured in a fatal accident on the Cape Coast–Accra Highway on Monday afternoon.

The crash, which occurred at Wakrom Junction near Yamoransa, involved a DAF truck carrying 700 bags of rice and a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), its rescue team from the Central Regional Headquarters was dispatched at about 2:45 p.m. They arrived to find victims trapped in the mangled passenger vehicle.

Five people were extricated from the wreckage, four of whom were later confirmed dead at the hospital. One remains in critical condition.

The GNFS noted that 12 other passengers had already been rushed to the hospital before its team arrived. Unfortunately, one of them also passed away, bringing the total fatalities to five.

The driver and mate of the truck escaped unhurt.

The incident caused heavy traffic along the busy stretch as emergency services worked to rescue victims and clear the wreckage.

Authorities have since advised motorists to exercise extra caution when using the highway.
