Universal Friendship Organisation hails President Mahama’s amnesty for 998 inmates

The Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for granting amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, describing the gesture as an act of mercy and a step toward building a humane society.

In a statement issued and signed by its President, Samuel Adobah, he described the decision as reflecting the government’s compassion and dedication to the well-being of citizens.

“We extend our heartfelt commendations to President John Dramani Mahama for his wise and compassionate decision to grant amnesty to 998 prisoners. This gesture demonstrates the government’s commitment to rehabilitation, mercy, and the well-being of its citizens,” the statement read.

The group noted that the release will help ease congestion in the country’s prisons, improve living conditions for remaining inmates, and reduce government expenditure on prisoner upkeep.

According to the organisation, the amnesty also offers an opportunity for those released to rebuild their lives.

“We believe that the beneficiaries of this amnesty have been transformed through their experiences and are now poised to contribute positively to their communities,” it said.

The Universal Friendship Organisation further called on families and communities to welcome the freed inmates without stigma, stressing that reintegration support is crucial for long-term rehabilitation.

“We urge family and friends to welcome these individuals with open arms, provide them with the necessary support, and work towards eliminating stigmatization against them. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society that values redemption and second chances,” the statement urged.

The organisation also encouraged the government to continue prioritising prison reforms and rehabilitation programmes to ensure sustainable reintegration of ex-convicts into society.
