Akwatia by-election: NDC’s Bernard Bediako wins

Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Akwatia by-election, securing a decisive victory for the government in one of the year’s most closely contested polls.

Certified results from the Electoral Commission showed Bediako polling 18,199 votes out of the total valid votes cast. His closest contender, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) managed just 82 votes. In all, 33,819 votes were declared valid, with 303 rejected ballots recorded.

The by-election followed the death of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year. Campaigning was fiercely contested, with both the NDC and NPP deploying heavy resources and manpower in the constituency.

Voting was held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, across 119 polling stations. Polls closed at 5 p.m., after which sorting and counting were carried out in the presence of party agents, security officers, and independent observers.

Bediako’s victory sparked wild celebrations among NDC supporters, who took to the streets of Akwatia in jubilation. Political observers say the result is particularly significant because Akwatia has long been a swing constituency, alternating between the NPP and NDC in previous elections.

“The NDC’s latest win is being seen as a major boost to the governing party’s confidence ahead of the 2028 general elections.”

With the outcome, Bernard Bediako becomes the new MP for Akwatia, pledging to continue the work of his predecessor while advancing the government’s development agenda in the constituency.
