Akwatia By-Election: NPP petitions IGP over threats and violence by NDC officials

The September 2 Akwatia by-election, which was expected to be peaceful, turned chaotic with scenes of threats and confrontations.

In response, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, and the Ghana Police Service, accusing NDC National Vice Chairman, Mr. Awudu Sofo Azorka, and the party’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Abdul Wahab Amadu, of criminal conduct.

According to the petition, Mr. Azorka threatened Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, saying: “Ɔmo se Afenyo-Markin aba ha. Medɔ Nyame anka me bɛtoo no wɔ ha aa, Yɛbɛyɛ by-election wɔ ne krom,” meaning, “They said Afenyo-Markin was here. I swear to God, if I had met him here, there would have been a by-election in his constituency.”

The NPP also alleged that Mr. Azorka assaulted its Third Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, and that “a member of Azorka’s thugs slapped him in the full glare of the public.”

The petition further accused Abdul Wahab Amadu of threatening key NPP leaders.

“Annoh Dompreh, Nana B; if they joke, wallahi, they will all die. I swear by God. I swear by my late father in his grave, Afenyo Markin, Annoh Dompreh, Nana B… We are ready for them.”

The NPP urged the IGP to act swiftly by investigating, arresting, and prosecuting those involved, stressing that “Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa depends on our ability to conduct elections free from intimidation and violence.”
