Bawumia files to lead NPP, says integrity and humility make him the right choice

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his readiness to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing integrity, competence, and humility as his strongest assets.

Speaking after filing his nomination forms at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, Dr. Bawumia stressed that both the NPP and Ghana are in search of a leader who reflects the party’s values and the aspirations of the country.

“The NPP and Ghana are demanding a leader who embodies deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience. As the NPP seeks a leader who represents the character of this party’s tradition and the values of our forebears, I, Mahamudu Bawumia, offer myself to lead the party into the 2028 elections,” he declared.

He further noted that the upcoming primary was not just about choosing a flagbearer but about safeguarding the soul of the NPP. According to him, the decision delegates make on January 31 will shape whether the party stays true to its founding values or becomes one that entrenches social divisions.

The nomination filing attracted hundreds of enthusiastic supporters who thronged the party headquarters. Dr. Bawumia, joined by his wife, Samira Bawumia, was welcomed with loud cheers as he officially submitted his forms.

The contest is expected to be fierce. His closest rival from the 2023 primaries, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, has also filed to contest. Other contenders include former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong and Abetifi MP and former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has also declared his interest and is expected to file his nomination later today. Meanwhile, former flagbearer hopeful Francis Addai-Nimoh has bowed out, citing unhealthy monetisation of the process, internal bias, and poor timing.
