Birim NSS corruption claims: EOCO invites whistleblower to assist probe on Feb 9

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has invited a whistleblower to its head office in Accra to assist with investigations into alleged corruption within the National Service Scheme (NSS) in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

In a message acknowledged by the whistleblower, cited by Online Times, EOCO confirmed that the earlier petition has been taken up by its Intelligence Unit and requested that the individual report to the agency on Monday, February 9, 2026, to support ongoing investigations.

“Compliment from EOCO. Your petition is being handled by the Intelligence Unit. You are to visit the Head Office of EOCO on Monday, 9th February, 2026, at 10 am to assist investigations,” it stated.

The invitation follows a detailed petition sent to the Presidency several months ago, in which the whistleblower raised concerns about alleged payroll and posting irregularities within the NSS system in Birim North.

According to the petition, some public sector workers were allegedly enlisted under the NSS without rendering service, with proceeds from the arrangement reportedly shared among facilitators.

The whistleblower, who was then serving in the district after an initial posting to a public audit-related institution, expressed fears for personal safety and called for protection and relocation while authorities investigated the matter.

The petition urged the government to act swiftly to protect the integrity of the National Service Scheme and uphold public trust in state institutions.

EOCO’s move to formally engage the whistleblower marks the first public indication that the allegations are being actively examined by law enforcement authorities.

Background

Several months ago, a national service person serving in Birim North petitioned the Presidency, alleging systemic corruption within the local administration of the National Service Scheme.

The petition cited concerns over unethical practices, abuse of official access, and the alleged diversion of public funds through irregular postings.

The whistleblower appealed for state protection and a full investigation, citing risks to personal safety. EOCO has now stepped in to take over preliminary intelligence and investigative work.
