Daddy Lumba’s one-week observance to be held at Black Star Square

The one-week observance of music icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, will now be held at the Black Star Square, Independence Square in Accra, on Saturday, August 30.

The change of venue from the University of Ghana Stadium was made to comply with a directive from the La State Council, which had urged the late musician’s family to consider postponing the event in line with a ban on noise-making in the La Traditional Area.

At a press conference on Thursday, August 28, the La State Council said it had taken notice of media adverts about the ceremony and reminded organisers that the ban, which began on August 11, 2025, would only be lifted on September 5, 2025.

Earlier this month, the family announced that the one-week observance would be held in Accra, with the final funeral rites to take place in Kumasi. The venue, however, had not been confirmed at the time.

The decision came after the family, led by Head of Family (Abusuapanyin) Kofi Owusu, formally informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of Lumba’s death at the Manhyia Palace. Mr. Owusu explained that, as a royal, the family could not announce any arrangements without first informing the Asantehene and seeking his counsel.

Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, at the age of 60. Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region, he began his music career at age 16, leading the Juaben Secondary School choir in 1983.

After travelling to Germany to seek greener pastures, he met fellow musician Ernest Nana Acheampong, who introduced him to highlife music. Together, they formed the Lumba Brothers, rising to fame with hits beginning with “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu.”

The duo released several successful songs before eventually pursuing solo careers, with Daddy Lumba going on to become one of Ghana’s most celebrated and influential highlife musicians.
