EC confirms Bawumia as NPP flagbearer for 2028

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the elected flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday.

Dr. Bawumia emerged winner after securing a commanding majority of votes cast by delegates nationwide, earning the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

According to results from the polls, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong finished third. They were followed by Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

The internal contest recorded the participation of more than 211,000 delegates, who voted at 333 polling centres across the country’s 275 constituencies. The exercise was conducted under heightened security and supervision by party officials, ensuring a transparent and orderly process.

Observers and party leaders have described the election as largely peaceful, with only minor incidents reported during voting and collation.

Addressing supporters after the declaration, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to party delegates for their confidence in him and pledged to lead an inclusive campaign.

He urged supporters of all aspirants to unite behind the party’s leadership as preparations begin toward the 2028 polls.
