The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure.

In a statement dated January 16, 2026, the Commission explained that the seat has become vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, making it necessary to conduct a by-election to elect a new representative for the constituency.
The EC said nominations will be received from prospective candidates from Monday, February 9 to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge.
Nominations will be accepted daily between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
According to the Commission, nomination forms will be available for download on its website from Friday, January 16, 2026, until Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Candidates may submit completed forms personally or through their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the municipal office within the stated period.
“The nomination forms for each candidate shall be witnessed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and supported by eighteen other registered voters in the constituency,” the EC stated.
EC adding that all forms must also carry the candidate’s written consent.
Each candidate is also required to submit two copies of a recent bust-size photograph against a red background, clearly showing the full face and ears, at the time of filing nominations.
The filing fee has been pegged at GH¢10,000 per candidate. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500. All nomination documents are to be submitted in quadruplicate.
Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, urged the public and prospective candidates to take note of the guidelines and timelines as preparations begin for the by-election.
The Ayawaso East by-election will determine a new parliamentary representative for the constituency following the loss of its sitting MP.
