FDA halts production of Tasty Tom Tomato Mix over health risks, orders immediate recall

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect, citing serious public health concerns following an inspection of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited’s manufacturing facility.

The action, announced on August 3, 2025, follows a market recall directive covering all canned versions of the tomato mix, as well as specific pouch variants in 380g and 1.05kg sizes.

According to the FDA, the decision stems from multiple consumer complaints and a subsequent investigation that uncovered poor maintenance of critical manufacturing equipment and ineffective monitoring systems.

These failures reportedly compromised the product’s sealing mechanisms, causing bloating and contamination.

“Mold was found on some of the pouches, raising serious health and safety concerns. The lapses observed could not guarantee the integrity of the products, especially those in pouches, thus necessitating this urgent regulatory action.”

Notably, the FDA revealed that Nutrifoods Ghana Limited had already been barred from manufacturing the product earlier this year, in January 2025. The authority has since launched an internal probe to determine whether regulatory oversights contributed to the lapse.

“In line with our commitment to transparency and accountability, any dereliction of duty identified will be swiftly dealt with,” the agency emphasized.

The FDA is urging all consumers, wholesalers, and retailers to comply with the directive and return affected products immediately. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to upholding food safety standards and protecting public health.
