FDA Urges Schools to Prioritize Food Safety: Compliance Deadline Imminent

FDA Issues Warning to Unlicensed Food Service Establishments

In a bid to enhance food safety measures within educational institutions, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a targeted directive urging schools to prioritize compliance with regulatory standards. With a specific focus on canteen operations, the FDA emphasizes the critical importance of obtaining a valid Food Hygiene Permit to ensure the safety of food served to students.

The FDA’s announcement underscores the legal requirement, as stipulated in the Public Health Act 2012 (Act 851), for all food service establishments to operate within the framework of established regulations. Failure to adhere to these regulations may result in severe consequences, including facility closures, fines, and criminal prosecutions.

In light of these regulations, schools are urged to promptly assess the status of their canteen facilities and ensure compliance with FDA guidelines. This includes engaging only licensed caterers for the provision of daily meals and school events. Additionally, institutions are advised to verify the Food Hygiene Permits of vendors before awarding contracts, thus ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

To further facilitate compliance, the FDA encourages schools to collaborate with the authority by reporting any unlicensed food service establishments operating within their premises. By working together, schools can contribute to the overarching goal of safeguarding the health and safety of students.

As the compliance deadline of 29th February 2024 approaches, schools are urged to take proactive measures to rectify any non-compliance issues and obtain the necessary permits. The FDA reiterates its commitment to supporting schools in this endeavor and emphasizes the importance of prioritizing food safety as a fundamental aspect of student well-being.
