Fisheries Ministry rolls out GPS tracking for canoes to protect Ghanaian fishermen at sea after pirate attacks

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has announced the introduction of GPS tracking systems and other safety interventions for artisanal fishing vessels following recent pirate attacks on fishermen at Senya Breku.

In a press statement issued by its Public Relations Unit, the Ministry said it had noted with deep concern recent pirate attacks targeting Ghanaian fishermen, but was relieved that all the affected fishermen had been safely rescued.

“The Ministry is, however, relieved to confirm the safe rescue of all seventy-one (71) Ghanaian fishermen who were recently attacked and held at sea,” the statement said.

The Ministry commended the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Navy, and the Office of the President for what it described as a “swift, coordinated and professional response” that ensured the safe return of the fishermen.

It also acknowledged the role of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, whose engagement with fishing communities and state institutions contributed significantly to the successful operation.

Beyond the rescue, the Ministry outlined new measures aimed at preventing future attacks and improving safety at sea.

“In line with these reforms, the Ministry is implementing additional measures, including improved registration and licensing of fishing canoes, introduction of GPS tracking and long-range communication systems for artisanal vessels, and the rollout of insurance and pension schemes for fishermen,” the statement noted.

According to the Ministry, the GPS tracking and communication systems will enable better monitoring of fishing vessels and facilitate faster emergency response when incidents occur at sea.

The government is also enhancing naval patrol capacity to strengthen surveillance, deterrence, and rapid response operations within Ghana’s territorial waters.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Ministry stressed, “Government remains firmly committed to protecting Ghanaian fishermen and securing our territorial waters.”

It further urged fishing communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, emphasizing that fisheries remain a vital pillar of food security, employment, and coastal stability.

“Government will continue to act decisively to keep Ghana’s seas safe and secure.”
