Former Chief Justice Torkornoo to challenge removal in court

The legal team of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has announced plans to challenge the Committee of Inquiry’s recommendation that led to her removal from office.

The Committee, established by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions of misconduct against her, submitted its report on September 1, 2025, finding her guilty and advising her dismissal.

But her lead counsel and former Attorney-General, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, maintains that the former Chief Justice was denied a fair process and deserves her day in court.

“This is an option we are looking for to get the records straight. When Dr. Danquah went to court to talk about Re Akoto and the abuse of fundamental human rights, people did not take him seriously. But today, people are praising him for having fought that good fight. So, we will go to court at the right time,” Mr. Otoo said.

If filed, the case is expected to test the extent of presidential powers and the constitutional protections afforded to judicial office holders in Ghana’s democracy.
