The GaDangme Council clarified that the relationship between a traditional Ga priest and the 12-year-old girl is a betrothal, not a marriage. Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, faced criticism after a video surfaced showing him in a ceremony with the girl, Naa Okromo.

The ceremony, held on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Nungua, garnered attention. Gborbu Wulomo defended his actions, stating that the girl wouldn’t be expected to fulfill marital duties.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 1, by its President Ayikoi Otoo, the Council clarified that it engaged with Gborbu Wulomo and his elders. It emphasized that the relationship is a betrothal, not a marriage, altering the legal implications.
Acknowledging that betrothal might involve an underage person, the Council stressed that it doesn’t permit the initiation of a sexual relationship with such a child. This could jeopardize her education and health. The Council urged Gborbu Wulomo to address concerns, safeguard the girl’s well-being and rights, and prioritize her education throughout the engagement process.
“It’s crucial for her to continue her education until she reaches the legal age of marriage. Even then, marriage should not disrupt her education if she’s willing to continue,” the statement read.
The GaDangme Council also called upon the girl’s parents to ensure she understands that despite the betrothal, she’s still entitled to enjoy her childhood and engage in youthful activities.
