The Ghana Education Service (GES) has distributed more than 6.6 million sanitary pads to schoolgirls across all 16 regions of the country as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene and reduce absenteeism among adolescent girls.

The initiative coincides with the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated globally on October 11 under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”
In a statement signed by Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, he described the gesture forms part of the Government of Ghana’s pledge to provide free sanitary pads monthly to schoolgirls from the basic to second-cycle levels, ensuring that no girl misses classes during her menstrual period.
“This initiative is aimed at addressing menstrual hygiene challenges and ensuring that no girl misses school during her menstrual period.”
He explained that the distribution of 6,607,095 pads is a major step toward promoting gender equality in education and improving the dignity, confidence, and academic participation of young girls across the country.
Mr. Fenyi reaffirmed the Service’s dedication to building an inclusive and equitable education system that supports the well-being of every learner.
“The GES assures all school girls of its continuous support and encourages them to stay focused on their studies and take full advantage of the opportunities provided to them,” he said.
The Service also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education for its role in implementing what it described as a “life-changing initiative” for girls nationwide.
The International Day of the Girl Child serves as a global reminder of the need to empower girls, protect their rights, and create equal opportunities for them to thrive in education and leadership.
