Goosie Tanoh’s backing of Mahama’s 24-hour economy reignites push for Progressive-NDC – Benjamin Anyagre

A leading voice in Ghana’s progressive movement, Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, has called on Nkrumaists and allied groups to unite with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in pursuit of a people-centered political future.

In an open letter to progressive forces, Anyagre, CEO of the Afrikan Continental Union Consult (ACUC), argued that fragmentation within the movement has weakened its influence, stressing the need for cooperation rather than isolation.

“The critical question is: Should Ghana’s progressive forces continue fragmented and weakened, or unite with the NDC to recover the indelible gains of Kwame Nkrumah and drive a people-centered political future?” he asked.

He praised the support of veteran politician Goosie Tanoh for President John Mahama’s 24-hour economy vision, describing it as a transformative agenda aligned with Nkrumaist principles.

According to him, such unity would not be an “ideological surrender” but rather a “strategic cooperation” to embed Nkrumaist ideals within a broader social democratic framework.

Mr. Anyagre further urged progressive scholars, activists, and community-based organisations to “step into a new era of unity, cohesion, and renewal, reclaiming Osagyefo’s vision and retooling Ghana for prosperity.”

Background

Ghana’s democracy, like in many African states, has gradually turned into a market commodity, where the will of the people is traded for short-term interests. Once-strong CPP electoral bastions have shifted into the hands of the NDC.

Historically, there have been moments of alignment between Nkrumaist and social democratic forces:

  1. The NDC–NCP alliance (1992–1996),
  2. The Liberated Nkrumaist Brigade (1995) endorsing Prof. Atta-Mills,
  3. John Mahama’s link to Nkrumah’s legacy through his family background.

These demonstrate that Nkrumaist ideals and social democracy can intersect productively.

 Challenges-

Yet, today’s progressive movements are fragmented—weakened by egos, revenge, tribalism, and mistrust. Many progressives still carry grudges against the PNDC era, despite its recognition of Nkrumah’s contributions (e.g., the Mausoleum, KNUST renaming, support for liberation movements).

Meanwhile, the NDC is moving closer to practical social democracy, as seen in John Mahama’s 24-hour Economic Strategy, which resonates with Nkrumah’s Seven-Year Development Plan.

If progressives continue to operate in isolation, clinging to rigid ideological positions, the result will be further division, loss of influence, and betrayal of Nkrumah’s vision.

The critical question is:

Should Ghana’s progressive forces continue fragmented and weakened, or unite with the NDC to recover the indelible gains of Kwame Nkrumah and drive a people-centered political future?

 The way forward-

The answer is clear: Progressives must rally around a renewed alliance with the NDC.

  • This is not ideological surrender, but strategic cooperation—a way to embed Nkrumaist and scientific socialist ideals within a broad social democratic framework.
  • Such unity will allow recovery of Nkrumah’s lost gains, reversal of setbacks from the 1966 coup, and reclamation of looted resources (e.g., $2.3 billion lost to “property-owning democrats”).
  • It will also align Ghana with continental liberation movements, as reaffirmed at the 2025 Liberation Movements Summit in South Africa, where ANC, FRELIMO, SWAPO, ZANU-PF, MPLA, and CCM declared a renewed commitment to unity, economic emancipation, and youth empowerment.

With progressive forces acting as “Nkrumaist Capacitor” inside the NDC, Ghana can build a broad-based, People Centered Afrikan Political Party—an unbeatable force for transformation.

The Progressive Movement should not relent nor be mute to help intensify advocacy to retrieve looted monies in the hands of syndicate political cartels back to the people of Ghana.

Progressively, Comrade Goosie Tanoh is honestly helping Comrade John Mahama – 24 Hr Economy vision to transform Ghana into the “State We Want”.

His support is lauded by known progressive forces across Afrika.

In Ghana, the Progressive Community Based Organizations, Cadres, Peasant farmers, Market Women, etc should fully avail themselves in work to make a joyous and prosperous state.

No one can bring about the Ghana we want, except by the Ghanaian who is suffering under the pain of continuous poverty and hunger bedevilled with greedy leaders in many sectors of production.

Conclusion

The time for division is over.

Progressives must step into a new era of unity, cohesion, and renewal, reclaiming Osagyefo’s vision and retooling Ghana for prosperity.

Over to you—progressive scholars, activists, and leaders. Ghana waits.
