Jan 9 declared public holiday to mark Constitution Day

Ghanaians will enjoy a long weekend in early January as Friday, January 9, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to mark Constitution Day.

The announcement was made by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP) in a statement issued on January 2, explaining that the shift was necessary because the statutory holiday falls midweek.

Although Constitution Day is marked annually on January 7, President John Dramani Mahama, acting under an Executive Instrument (E.I.), approved the adjustment in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended.

“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 7th January 2026, marks Constitution Day, which is a statutory public holiday. However, His Excellency the President has declared Friday, 9th January 2026, as a public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.

The Ministry of the Interior urged the public to take note of the change and observe the holiday nationwide.
