Mahama commissions Sahara LPG Vessel to boost energy supply across West Africa

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the Sahara LPG vessel MT Asharami Ghana, describing the development as a major step toward strengthening global and regional energy logistics while advancing country’s commitment to cleaner and more reliable energy.

The commissioning ceremony took place in South Korea, where the President emphasized that the event represents more than the launch of a new vessel.

According to him, the development marks an important milestone in strengthening the infrastructure supporting the global supply chain of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

“This is more than the launch of a vessel. It represents a significant milestone in strengthening the infrastructure that underpins the global Liquefied Petroleum Gas supply chain,” Mahama said.

He noted that energy access and the transition to cleaner energy sources remain among the most pressing challenges of the modern era, stressing the role LPG plays in improving household energy access, supporting industrial activities and reducing environmental pressures across Africa.

President Mahama further highlighted that the commissioning demonstrates the importance of strategic partnerships and forward-looking investments aimed at strengthening energy security for Ghana and the wider West African region.

The vessel was developed through collaboration between the Sahara Group and West Africa Gas Limited (WAGL) under an energy initiative designed to expand regional LPG transport capacity.

Officials say the vessel will support the delivery of safe, efficient and reliable LPG supplies to households, industries and businesses across Ghana and other parts of West Africa.

President Mahama also reaffirmed Ghana’s recognition of the transformative potential of LPG in driving socio-economic development and supporting Africa’s broader energy transition agenda.
