President John Dramani Mahama has pledged six months of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, as a personal contribution toward improving healthcare for patients with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

The announcement was made during the official launch of the Fund on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra. The initiative is a key part of the government’s health agenda and aims to offer financial relief to Ghanaians facing major health challenges.
Reflecting on personal loss, President Mahama recalled the passing of his father due to prostate cancer and his mother’s death from hypertension-related complications. He also cited the case of a staff member whose child requires expensive weekly dialysis due to kidney disease.
“These are the stories that push us to act,” Mahama said, urging both public and private sector stakeholders to commit to the fund.
He appealed to corporate Ghana to dedicate part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budgets to the initiative. “If you give anything, consider that you are giving to your own staff or customers,” he said.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to enhance healthcare equity by easing the financial burden of critical care for many vulnerable citizens.
