President John Dramani Mahama will depart Accra on Sunday, March 1, 2026, for Arusha, Tanzania, where he is scheduled to serve as Special Guest of Honour at the official opening of the 2026 judicial year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The ceremony, set for Monday in Arusha, will also mark the launch of activities commemorating the Court’s 20th anniversary under the theme, “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”
According to a statement issued on February 28 by the President’s spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the invitation represents a historic moment for Ghana.
It will be the first time a sitting Ghanaian President has been invited to address the African Union Court.
The African Court, which plays a central role in safeguarding human and peoples’ rights across the continent, is marking two decades of judicial service, a milestone that organisers say reflects its evolving impact on governance, accountability and the rule of law in Africa.
While in Arusha, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral talks with Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, as part of efforts to deepen diplomatic and continental cooperation.
The President will return to Accra shortly after Monday’s programme. In his absence, the Vice President will act as President in accordance with Article 60(8) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The visit underscores Ghana’s continued engagement with continental institutions and its longstanding commitment to the promotion of human rights and democratic governance across Africa.
