Mahama removes Chief Justice Torkornoo from office

President John Dramani Mahama has removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office with immediate effect, following the recommendation of an Article 146 Committee of Inquiry.

The decision, announced on Monday, September 1, 2025, was taken in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, which obliges the president to act on the committee’s findings.

The committee, chaired under Article 146(6), was tasked with investigating a petition submitted by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori. After reviewing the petition and evidence, it concluded that the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established and recommended her removal.

In a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government confirmed that the president had acted on the committee’s binding recommendation.

“After considering the petition and the evidence, the Committee found that the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established and recommended her removal from office,” the statement said.
