Mahama’s Big Push: Government set to construct 3.6km Afram bridge, expand roads network

The government is set to embark on a major infrastructure project that will see the construction of a 3.6km bridge over the River Afram in the Eastern Region, alongside approximately 100km of new roads.

The project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s ambitious “Big Push” agenda, which aims to boost agricultural productivity, stimulate economic growth, and significantly reduce poverty across the region.

Roads under consideration for upgrading include the Mpraeso–Obomeng–Nkawkaw road, Abooso–Mpaem road, Mpaem–Kwahu–Adawso road, and the Feyiase–Kwahu Tafo road. Others are the Ekye Amanfrom–Takoratwene stretch, Takoratwene–Dome road, Takoratwene–Donkorkrom link, and Donkorkrom–New Kyeiase road.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, earlier today led a team of engineers to the proposed bridge site and inspected several critical road networks.

Speaking to journalists at Donkorkrom after the inspection, Hon. Agbodza reiterated the government’s resolve to transform the Afram Plains into a vibrant economic zone.

“The bridge, when completed, will connect Eastern, Ashanti, and OTI regions in a very strategic way. It will open up the place for big-time agriculture and investment in agro-processing,” he emphasized.

The project is expected to foster regional integration, create job opportunities, and provide a major boost to agriculture, agro-processing, and related industries, ultimately transforming the Afram Plains into a key driver of Ghana’s rural development.
