Massive crowd at NPP headquarters as supporters await Bawumia’s nomination filing

Hundreds of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters thronged the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down, Accra, this morning to await the arrival of Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to submit his presidential nomination forms. Party faithful, clad in red, white, and blue, sang and danced as security and marshals managed the growing crowd ahead of the expected filing.

Dr Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate and a front-runner in the current flagbearer race, is filing as part of the party’s timetable for selecting its 2028 presidential candidate. Nominations officially opened at the end of July 2025 and have triggered heightened activity at the headquarters throughout the week.

Those who have already filed their nominations include three prominent aspirants:

Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong — filed on Tuesday, August 26, 2025
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong — filed on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Dr Bryan Acheampong — also filed on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

Other hopefuls, including Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, have publicly indicated plans to file today, adding to the intense atmosphere at the party offices.

The NPP has fixed its presidential primary for Saturday, January 31, 2026, when delegates will elect the flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. The date was announced in June and reaffirmed in subsequent party communications and media reports.

Today’s turnout underscores the high stakes of the contest and the strong grassroots mobilisation around the leading campaigns. With several candidates now on the ballot and others set to file, attention will shift to vetting, constituency and regional campaigning, and efforts by party leaders to keep the race dignified and issues-focused ahead of the January 31 poll.
