Mobile Money agents without Ghana Card linkage to be blocked on February 1 – Telecoms Chamber

Deadline Looms for Electronic Money Issuers in Ghana to Link Accounts with National IDs

In a crucial development, Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) nationwide have been granted until the close of business on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, to coordinate with agents for the mandatory linking of their accounts with either the Ghana Card or Tax Identification Number (TIN).

A directive issued by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications on January 30, 2024, underscores the urgency, revealing that failure to comply with this directive will lead to the blocking of their SIM cards.

The decision to enforce this measure follows extensive discussions between the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the leadership of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), as highlighted in the chamber’s official announcement. This move aims to strengthen regulatory compliance and enhance the integration of national identification systems within the electronic money ecosystem.

Below is the statement:

Following extensive discussions with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) regarding linking agent accounts to Ghana Cards or TIN, EMIs have been granted until January 31, 2024, for agents to complete this process. Effective February 1, 2024, agent accounts without Ghana Cards will be blocked.

Affected agents have been notified through various channels. This press release serves as a final call-to-action, urging agents to link their accounts with Ghana Cards or TIN by January 31, 2023. Failure to comply will result in account blocking.

Agents with suspended accounts on February 1, 2024, can visit any operator outlet with their Ghana Card or TIN to complete the process.
